Follow the Load to the Ground
Learn the basic idea of a load path and how each part of a structure transfers forces through the building and ultimately to the ground.
Understand Why Every Part Matters
Like an arch, a structural system depends on connected parts working together. Changing one part can affect what happens somewhere else.
Know When a Calculation Is Required
Learn why structural decisions such as carrying loads across openings are not based on guesses. They require the right information and qualified professionals.
About Stick Six — The Arch
A building has to carry its loads safely to the ground. Stick Six introduces the idea of the load path — how loads move from one part of the building to another until they reach the ground. Using the arch as a simple picture, you’ll see why every part of that path matters and why changing one element can affect the larger system. The course also connects structural thinking to early project decisions, including defining the project and the owner’s program. The goal is not to make you a structural engineer. It is to help you recognize the structural questions, understand when something affects the load path, and know when a qualified professional needs to provide the answer.
