Plan for People to Change

Understand why a building may last longer than the household’s current plans and why the way spaces are used can change over time.

Make Future Changes Easier

Learn why preparing for changes the owner actually wants during design and construction may reduce disruption compared with trying to make those changes later.

Think Beyond One Generation

Explore how changing households, shared spaces, privacy, utilities, access, and other needs can affect the way a building or property works in the future.

About Stick Thirty-Eight — The Generational House

Buildings can remain while the people inside them change. Stick Thirty-Eight focuses on The Generational House — what happens to the building when the household changes over time. A nursery may become something else, children may return home, a parent may move in, or a different household may eventually occupy the building.  You’ll learn why adaptability is not about trying to predict every possible future. Instead, it means identifying the future changes an owner already wants to make easier and considering them before the building is finished.   The goal is to ask five questions: Who lives here now? Who might already be planned to live here later? What could change about how they use the building? What can we make easier to change now? And what should we record for the next person?
