Calculate the Load First
Understand why the building creates the load and the equipment responds to it — not the other way around.
Match Equipment to the Building
Learn why climate, orientation, insulation, windows, air leakage, ventilation, occupancy, and moisture assumptions should come before equipment selection.
Know What Each System Actually Does
Understand the separate jobs of heating, cooling, ventilation, moisture control, filtration, and air circulation instead of assuming one piece of equipment handles everything.
About Stick Thirty-Five — The Heart
The mechanical equipment is the heart of this Stick, but the building determines what that heart needs to do. Stick Thirty-Five focuses on selecting equipment based on the building’s actual loads rather than square footage, rules of thumb, or equipment that happened to be installed in another building. You’ll learn to ask whether the load was calculated, what assumptions went into it, what equipment was selected, how that equipment performs when the load is small, and whether the installed system was tested against what was designed. The goal is to keep four questions in mind: What is the load? What equipment was selected for that load? What does that equipment do when the load is small? And did anybody test what actually happened?

Match the Heart to the Building
Do not choose the equipment first and make the building fit it. Start Stick Thirty-Five and learn how the building’s loads, moisture needs, ventilation, and other conditions should guide the equipment that belongs inside it.
