Understand Where the Sun Hits

Learn why different sides of the same building receive different solar exposure depending on orientation, time of day, season, and location.

Understand How Solar Exposure Changes Loads

See how sunlight through glazing can add heat and how solar exposure on walls and roofs can change surface temperatures and heat-flow conditions.

Work With the Sun

Learn to ask four simple questions: Where is the sun? Which face of the building sees it? When does it see it? And what does that change?

About Stick Thirty-Three — The Sun’s Face

The sun moves across the building, but the building cannot move out of the way. Stick Thirty-Three focuses on The Sun’s Face — how solar exposure and building orientation can change the loads placed on a building. A window facing one direction does not experience the same conditions as one facing another, and roofs and walls can experience very different solar exposure.   You’ll learn how orientation, glazing, trees, nearby buildings, hills, porches, overhangs, season, and time of day can change how much solar energy reaches different parts of the building. The goal is to understand the sun as part of the building’s load rather than treating every side of the building as though it experiences the same conditions.

Design With the Sun in Mind

The sun reaches every side of a building differently. Start Stick Thirty-Three and learn how orientation, shading, glazing, and solar exposure can change the loads the building has to manage.
