Find the Source
Learn to start by identifying where unwanted sound is coming from instead of jumping straight to a product or solution.
Follow the Path
Understand that sound reaches people through a path, and the whole building assembly can influence how that sound travels.
Design for the Person
Think about who actually has to live with the sound and why comfort begins with what the person inside the building experiences.
About Stick Twenty-One — The Quiet
Buildings are not experienced only through temperature, air, and light. People also experience them through what they hear. Stick Twenty-One focuses on the whole path sound takes to reach a person and what the building does about each part of that path. The course organizes the problem around three simple questions: Where is the sound coming from? How is it getting there? Who has to listen to it? In other words: Source. Path. Person. The goal is not to turn the learner into an acoustical professional. It is to help them recognize the sound problem and ask the right questions before assuming that one “quiet” product will solve it.
