Understand the Junctions

Learn why the places where walls, roofs, foundations, windows, doors, and other building parts meet deserve special attention.

Keep the Control Layers Continuous

Learn to trace the four control functions — water, air, thermal, and vapor — through every connection instead of thinking only about individual products.

Show Me the Last Six Inches

Understand why the end of an assembly is often more challenging than the middle, because different materials, planes, trades, and construction stages must come together.

About Stick Nineteen — The Seam

A building is made from many different pieces, and those pieces eventually have to connect. Stick Nineteen focuses on the seam — the place where one part of the building meets another and every control layer has to find its way through the connection.   At each junction, you’ll learn to consider four control functions: water, air, thermal, and vapor. Then you’ll ask whether the structural connection can work with those controls and whether somebody can actually build the detail in the required sequence.   The goal is to stop looking only at the easy middle of an assembly and start paying attention to the transitions where building problems often begin.
